While in Japan, one thing you have to do is to enjoy sushi. Based on Tablelog’s (leading local magazine) survey of Tokyo people, we recommend 6 sushi places you should never leave without trying them. Most premium sushi bars require reservations months in advance and they are usually very pricey, however, for those not ready for the luxury, we have included plan B.

6. Umegaoka Sushi no Midori Sohonten

Midori sushi is no match for other high end sushi bars. But for budget traveler wanting to enjoy sushi, this place is like a heaven. You could enjoy decent sushi with less than 3,000 Yen, and the food is not bad. You don’t even need prior reservation.

5. Sushi Dai

Located at the world-famous Tsukiji fish market, this sushi bar is well known to offer the freshest sushi at very reasonable prices. It is hard to find a sushiya with this quality and price. Since they do not take reservations, you have to jump into the amazingly long queue up to three hours. But it is definitely worth it.

4. Sushi Ichikawa

Ichikawa, a pupil of famous master Araki, is as famous as Jiro, but locals love to visit his sushi bar. Despite the short history, his restaurant already captured Tokyo people’s tastes. His sushi bar is ranked third by Tableog.

3. Sushi Miyako

Though Sushi Miyako does not have fancy stars given by Michelin guide, locals know this sushi bar is good enough to be ranked 4th according to Tablelog, the leading restaurant guide in Japan. Miyako’s sushi costs around 12,000 Yen, half the price of other high end places, and their sushi is just as good as them. The Locals are always smarter than foreigners when it comes to a restaurant.

2. Jiro’s dreams of sushi

Master Chef Jiro’s shushi bar is believed to be the best on the planet. All the important people, including US President Obama visited this symbolic figure of sushi. Since it is shockingly expensive, if you don’t mind spending 40,000 Yen for a meal that lasts less than half an hour, this is the place to go.

He is so famous his life has been filmed into a documentary.

1. Sushi Saito

A young sushi master Saito made this tiny place into one of the best sushi bar on the universe. Sushi Saito is ranked number one Tablelog and chosen as a Asian top 50 restaurant.  Even prices are cheaper than other high end places. Super early reservation is absolutely required to secure a seat.
